๐Ÿ›๏ธ Roman Numeral Converter

Convert numbers (1-3999) to Roman numerals and Roman numerals back to numbers.

About this Roman Numeral Converter

Roman numerals use seven letters - I, V, X, L, C, D and M - combined with addition and subtraction rules to write numbers. This converter works both ways for values from 1 to 3999, the standard range without special overline symbols. It also validates Roman input, so malformed numerals such as IIII or VX are rejected with an explanation instead of a wrong answer.

How to use it

  1. Type a number and press Number to Roman, or
  2. type a Roman numeral and press Roman to Number.
  3. The answer appears in the other field and in the result box.
  4. Only whole numbers from 1 to 3999 are supported.

Example

The year 2024 converts to MMXXIV: MM = 2000, XX = 20 and IV = 4.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the range stop at 3999?

Numbers above 3999 need special overline symbols for thousands, which standard keyboards cannot type.

Why is 4 written IV and not IIII?

Roman numerals use subtraction for 4, 9, 40, 90, 400 and 900: a smaller numeral before a larger one is subtracted.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. The Roman system has no zero, which is one reason it was replaced by Arabic numerals for maths.
