๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Syllable Counter

Estimate syllables in your text โ€” total, per word, and a plain note on readability.

About this Syllable Counter

Syllables are the beats inside words โ€” 'cat' has one, 'banana' has three. This counter estimates the syllables in every word of your text using vowel-group rules, then totals them and averages them per word. Teachers, poets, speech writers and readability checkers use syllable counts for haiku, songs, and making text easier to read.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your sentence, poem or paragraph.
  2. Click Count syllables.
  3. See total syllables, the average per word, and a plain-English readability note.
  4. Watch the list of longest words if you want to simplify the text.

Example

The sentence 'The banana is on the table' counts 8 syllables across 6 words โ€” banana (3) and table (2) do most of the work.

Frequently asked questions

Is the count exact?

It is a close estimate based on vowel groups and silent-e rules. A few words (like 'poem' or 'rhythm') can fool any automatic counter by one syllable.

Why do syllables matter for readability?

Texts built from short, low-syllable words are measurably easier to read. Most readability formulas start with syllables per word.
