🅰️ Vowel Counter

Count vowels, consonants, digits and spaces in any text, with a full breakdown.

About this Vowel Counter

This counter breaks any text down into its building blocks: how many vowels (with a per-vowel tally), consonants, digits, spaces and other characters it contains. It is handy for language exercises, word puzzles, lipograms, pangram checks and curiosity about your own writing style.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Click Count vowels & more.
  3. Read the full breakdown, including how often each vowel appears.
  4. Try a sentence with no 'e' and see if you can spot it in the tally.

Example

The pangram 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' contains 11 vowels and 24 consonants, and uses every letter of the alphabet.

Frequently asked questions

Does 'y' count as a vowel?

No — this tool counts only a, e, i, o, u as vowels. In words like 'rhythm', y acts like a vowel sound but is tallied as a consonant here.

Are capital letters counted?

Yes. Uppercase and lowercase are counted together, so 'A' adds to the same tally as 'a'.
