#๏ธโƒฃ Hash Generator

Generate SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 hashes of any text with the Web Crypto API.

About this Hash Generator

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of data: the same input always gives the same hash, and even a one-character change produces a completely different one. This tool uses your browser's built-in Web Crypto API to compute SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 digests instantly, for verifying downloads, comparing files or generating checksums.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the text you want to fingerprint.
  2. The three hashes update as you type (or click Generate hashes).
  3. Copy the digest you need from its field.
  4. Compare it against a published checksum to confirm a match.

Example

The SHA-256 hash of the word hello is 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824 โ€” try it and compare.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no MD5 option?

MD5 is not part of the Web Crypto standard because it is considered broken for security use, so browsers do not offer it. We will not fake it โ€” use SHA-256 instead.

Can a hash be reversed back to the text?

No. Hashing is one-way. The only way to 'reverse' a short input is to guess it and compare hashes, which is why short passwords should never be stored as plain hashes.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. crypto.subtle is a browser built-in; the hashing happens on your device.
