About this HTTP Status Codes

Every HTTP response carries a three-digit status code. This reference lists 30+ of the codes you will actually meet, grouped by family: 1xx informational, 2xx success, 3xx redirects, 4xx client errors and 5xx server errors. Type any code, name or keyword and the table filters as you type.

How to use it

  1. Start typing in the search box โ€” a code like 404, a name like Redirect, or a word like 'legal'.
  2. The table filters instantly to matching codes.
  3. Read the meaning column to decide what to do next.
  4. Clear the search to see the full list again.

Example

Search 'gateway' and you get 502 Bad Gateway and 504 Gateway Timeout โ€” the two proxy errors that look alike but mean different things.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 401 and 403?

401 means you are not logged in; 403 means you are logged in but still not allowed. Logging in again fixes 401, not 403.

Is 404 my fault or the server's?

Neither, exactly: the URL points to something that isn't there โ€” a deleted page, a dead link or a typo in the address.
